What is FGEN Noles Living-Learning Community?
The FGEN Noles Living-Learning Community (FGEN Noles LLC) is designed to provide an environment that promotes diversity, inclusion, academic engagement, and campus community involvement for first-generation college students at Florida State University. In this interdisciplinary living-learning community, first-generation college students from all majors will engage in intentional development to support their college experience. FGEN Noles LLC is a program within the Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement (CARE)
FGEN Noles LLC will contribute to your success as at Florida State and beyond by:
- Promoting pathways related to engagement and success.
- Facilitating your transition into and through the first-year of your FSU collegiate experience.
- Encouraging development of academic, career and social related support networks consisting of other first-generation college students, faculty and staff.
- Affirming students' academic confidence and belonging within the FSU community.

FGEN Noles LLC is open to new, first-year students who identify as first generation college students. First Generation status is defined as neither parent (biological or adoptive) possessing a bachelor's degree.
Application
Please complete the general FSU LLC application by 11:59pm on April 3, 2023. The application is shared by all LLCs and requires essay response. Once submitted, CARE will follow-up with additional steps related to FGEN Noles LLC.
Location
The FGEN Noles LLC is currently located in Bryan Hall. However, for 2023-2024, Wildwood Hall will become the new home for the community. Wildwood Hall is a suite style residence conveniently located near dining, academic support, and student engagement.
FGEN Noles LLC Components
The FGEN Noles LLC will provide a mix of academic and student development focused experiences designed to support their success as an FSU student. Each resident is expected to engage in activities and be a responsible member of the community as outlined in the LLC Agreement.
- Required academic coursework will include a 1-credit hour colloquium and a 3-credit hour liberal studies course during the fall semester. These courses will only include FGEN Noles LLC residents.
- As a diverse community, residents will also be required to engage in understanding of cultural competence and commit to taking action to foster growth of their own intercultural competence through the Intercultural Development Inventory.
Other additional programming will include a mix of required and optional programming designed to support community building, academic success or introduce students to high impact practices such as service learning, undergraduate research, receiving mentorship from alumni or friends of FSU, creative activity with a CARE Faculty Fellow or creating social interest-based peer groups. Examples of such opportunities include:
- Enrollment in academic courses related to career development, academic success strategies or innovation.
- Mentorship of middle/high school youth through CARE's Pre-Collegiate Program.
- Book or Podcast Discussion Groups.
Being a CARE Student
As a FGEN Noles LLC resident, you would be considered a CARE student which provides you with access to support services during and after your first year. CARE’s extensive support network has propelled FSU’s retention and graduation rates for first-generation college students well above the national averages.
During your FSU experience you will have access to additional academic advisors, college life coaching, tutoring, CARE specific scholarships, and more! CARE staff will conduct semester check-ins with you and also communicate opportunities that will allow you to thrive at Florida State and beyond.
