The Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement was created at the Florida State University in 1968 as Horizons Unlimited. In January 2000, FSU combined Horizons Unlimited, Multicultural Student Support Services, Minority Academic Programs, and the Summer Enrichment Program into one entity, thus establishing the Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement (CARE). Pre-Collegiate programs were merged into CARE, thus establishing a system of support for traditionally underrepresented students from as early as the sixth grade. CARE operates to provide equity and access to students disadvantaged by virtue of educational and socioeconomic reasons.
Uniquely situated as a department in both the Division of Academic Affairs and the Division of Student Affairs, the Center is designed to provide transition, engagement, and academic support services for traditionally underrepresented and disadvantaged populations at Florida State University.
Mission
