Student Empowerment
The Student Transition, Empowerment and Progression (STEP) team provides holistic support that promotes persistence and academic success at FSU. Empowerment Specialists partner with students across CARE programs to identify goals, strengthen personal success strategies and build skills that support retention through graduation. Through individualized meetings, proactive outreach, and collaborative campus partnerships, the Student Empowerment team helps students develop the tools, knowledge, and self-advocacy needed to thrive during their college journey and beyond.

Student Empowerment Meeting Types
Student Empowerment Specialists offer three different types:
-
Individualized: One-on-One (In-person or Virtual)
-
Micro Groups: 3-4 students to 1 specialist (In-person or Virtual)
-

Academic Improvement Plans (AIP)
CARE supports students who are on Academic Warning, Academic Probation, or who earn below a 2.0 GPA in a semester through the Academic Improvement Plan (AIP). This plan is designed to help students reflect on their academic experiences, identify challenges, and develop strategies for future success. CARE’s Student Persistence and Outreach Specialist meets individually with students to discuss concerns, create a plan for improvement, and connect them with tools and support that strengthen their academic progress.
Academic Support Services
Empowerment Specialists provide supplemental academic support to help students make informed decisions. This may include reviewing course recommendations provided by major advisors, discussing considerations related to changing majors, and helping students think through academic options and next steps. Empowerment Specialists also assist students in understanding university policies, preparing for advising appointments, and identifying strategies that support academic progress and degree completion.
