What is Upward Bound?

The Upward Bound Program is one of the oldest existing TRIO programs, and was designed to provide support and motivation for participants by encouraging them to complete high school and to pursue post-secondary education.

The Florida State University/East Gadsden High School Upward Bound Program has been in existence since 1989. Since then, the program has continued to identify promising ninth through eleventh graders from low income/first generation backgrounds and motivate them through instruction, tutoring, and counseling.

This pre-collegiate program prepares participants to navigate their way through high school, succeed academically and attain social, emotional, and cultural growth and maturity. With these goals accomplished, Upward Bound is better able to fulfill its aim to increase the rates that our participants complete high school, enroll in and ultimately graduate from post-secondary educational programs.

Why is Upward Bound important?

Upward Bound is important because it generates skills and provides motivation to students that will help facilitate their academic success in high schools and eventually at the post-secondary institution of their choice.
